Is it a Terrible Faith?

Some time ago a novel appeared with an historical background. It concerned the period of the Revolutionary War when the American Colonies were fighting for their independence from the British Empire. One of the characters in the story was described by the author as a hard, cruel, vindictive person. The author portrayed him as mean and surly, the type who is repulsive to all who know him. Then followed a sentence which will incense all adherents of the Reformed Faith. The author remarked of this repulsive fellow:  He was a typical early American Calvinist.

How Does the Disciple Live?

How the disciple lives naturally comes out of who the disciple is.

As Jesus’ disciple, I am his apprentice in kingdom living. I am learning from him how to lead my life in the Kingdom of the Heavens as he would lead my life if he were I. It is my faith in him that led me to become his disciple. My confidence in him simply means that I believe that he is right about everything: that all that he is and says shows what life is at its best, what it was intended by God to be. “In him was life and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4 NAS)

Why Bother With Discipleship?

If we are Christians simply by believing that Jesus died for our sins, then that is all it takes to have sins forgiven and go to heaven when we die. Why, then, do some people keep insisting that something more than this is desirable? Lordship, discipleship, spiritual formation, and the like?

What more could one want than to be sure of their eternal destiny and enjoy life among others who profess the same faith as they do. Of course everyone wants to be a good person. But that does not require that you actually do what Jesus himself said and did. Haven't you heard? "Christians aren't perfect. Just forgiven."
